A Madison Type of Weekend

24 Oct

Recently, I undertook a weekend getaway to Madison, Wisconsin, a town I had only ever been to once before, and even then, only in passing. Now, I was going there to visit my friend and see my Fighting Sioux play hockey. Thank god for my friend being there and showing me around the town, because my team really stunk up the joint. But it’s early in the season, so I’m not overly concerned yet. Now, onto the pictures!

I would be remiss if I failed to mention this place. The Old Fashioned in Madison is a great place to grab a brew, or a mixed drink and some grub. Not only is it super cheap (THE MOST EXPENSIVE TAP BEER IS ONLY $4 A PINT ALL THE FREAKIN’ TIME PEOPLE!!!!) but it is extremely tasty. I mean, just look at that burger!!! If you are going to, or in, Madison, stop what you are doing and go here. No joke, it’s awesome. Also, because their place is called the Old Fashioned, I had to have one. And it was also very tasty and very reasonably priced once again. If I lived here, this would be my go-to for most meals I think. It certainly would be for the drinks they have.

The Kohl Center is a really impressive building from the outside, and there’s a good vibe inside as well (it’s certainly less staid than The Ralph), but because the football team was playing at the same time, it happened to trump the number of students and people at the game and so the atmosphere wasn’t as great as it could have been, but it’s still a fun place to go (The Ralph is still the best arena in the nation though).

And the night before leaving, I saw someone had put this heart balloon on a statue in front of the capital building and it looked kinda cool at night, so I took this picture. By the way, did you guys out there know that they call water fountains “bubblers?” God that’s weird.

Oh The Places I’ve Been

29 Sep

I’m not really sure what I mean with that title, but I did go golfing in Wisconsin, saw the Weisman Art Museum and the University of Minnesota campus and went around by my place to take pictures with a very fun, new little toy camera. So I guess I went places, but nowhere that I hadn’t really ever been before. Oh well, whatever. Enjoy the pictures.

The Weisman Art Museum is located on the U of M campus and was designed by Frank Gehry. He is famous for designing really outlandish and distinctive buildings and the Weisman is no exception. It is completely covered in stainless steel so it is hard to miss and when the sun comes out, as it did on the day I went there, the building really gives off a great shine and pops after being photographed. I went with black and white film for the 35 mm camera, but took a picture with my digital so you could get a sense of what it looks like in color.

I really like how the contrast in the black and white photos turned out because the building is so full of different nooks and crannies that, again, it really pops off the page. I also just walked around the U of M campus and took some pictures of other things that are out there. It’s a huge campus and there are many places to explore and these are just a few of the shots I took that day.

It being the last week of September, and before I start my new job, I went golfing with my dad for the final time this season at St. Croix National in Wisconsin. The course is really great and challenging. It also provides for some great scenery during the fall. Although it was rainy and a little too early for the full on fall effect yet, there were still some good shots out there and some nice looking foliage on the course. If it weren’t raining, it would have been quite the perfect day, but as it was, it was just an annoyance to play through.

After golfing, I got back to my place and, to my great surprise, I had a package in the mail. It was from South Korea and contained the awesome little camera that I ordered. It is a disderi robot camera and is so named because it looks like a little robot face. It’s so fun to play around with and looks like it too! It takes three images on one film image. Currently, I’m still playing around with it to figure out the best way to shoot with it, but it is so easy to tote around that I’m going to take it everywhere from now on. And yes, just as the instructions say, it is epoch-making!!!!

What could it be?!

The best part about that little camera, besides not using batteries to operate and being super light and small? IT WAS ONLY $15 SHIPPED!! So much fun for so little. You can’t beat that people. You just can’t.

My Busy Weekend

22 Jun

This past weekend provided a lot of entertainment for me. And considering that I hate weekends, it sure made it go a whole lot faster, which is certainly a good thing.

Friday provided me with the opportunity to take in a race in Uptown. This wasn’t a sweet car race though (which would have been the best ever) but was a bike race. The race itself was set up much like a car race, with laps, a pit area and an enthusiastic crowd. The main differences include the fact that these guys go a lot slower than cars, were literally a few inches from my face and there were no crashes – which bummed me out. Below are some pictures of the action. Note how close these guys were to the crowd and to each other. I’m still surprised they all got through in one piece. And speaking of getting through, this was a 40 lap race in which the course was .88 of a mile and took one hour and nine minutes. This means that their average speed was 30.6 mph! That’s pretty good for a bike race consisting of a bunch of 90 degree street corners and some short straights.

Saturday brought with it another gorgeous day and the chance to get out and golf. I went to Kilkarney Hills in Wisconsin. Its a course that I am very familiar with, but never seem to do to well on. And this day would prove no different. There were three holes on the front side that I scored eights on. If not for those, I would have had a fairly decent score, as I also had a birdie and four pars. Either way, it was a good day and better than not golfing.

Sunday was another great looking day, and it also happened to be Fathers’ Day. As such, my dad came over to my place. We biked around Calhoun and Lake of the Isles to check out the houses. Then, we headed over to my favorite cemetery! The Lakewood Cemetery is simply a great place to wander around. I cannot say enough about it. Just check out the pictures below and see how great it looks in the sunlight.

For dinner we went out to Khan’s Mongolian Barbeque, which, oddly enough, is not technically Mongolian or barbeque. It has its origins in Taiwan and actually derives from Japanese-style teppanyaki which was popular there at the time. Whatever it is, it tastes great and you get to see your food made in a couple of minutes right in front of you. I ended up full after a very full weekend.

As a side note, on Monday there was a skater convoy in downtown Minneapolis. Literally hundreds of skaters took over the streets and disrupted traffic for some reason. Here is a picture of them on Hennepin Avenue. For what reason they did this I have no clue, but it was very loud and odd.
