Using the Macro on my Camera

29 Jul

Lately I’ve been toying with shots that feature soft-focus backgrounds. They aren’t super hard to take (at least, not at the amateur level that I take them at) and they are fun to look at and try to perfect. These are just a couple of quick shots that I’ve tried (some more successfully than others) to take recently. I really want to go back to the Hennepin Avenue Bridge to try and get better shots of the Grain Belt sign from farther away so that it looks more like the Grain Belt is encapsulated in the heart shapes that the bridge has on it. Also, flowers are a great source to practice on, as you can get really close to them and easily learn the basics on how to do soft backgrounds.

Golf and others

29 Jun

You know, for my first time out golfing this year, I was mightily impressed with how I actually faired. Aside from a bad back nine one day, I shot both a 44 and a 41 on the front nine of different courses. Personally, I am very pleased with those results and both golfing days turned out to be gorgeous. Maybe the great weather helped my game?

Also, today is National Camera Day, and since I like to take pictures of things that are not really all that exciting, here are some shots of Minneapolis that I happened to take while I was downtown in this glorious weather today.

Just thought I would toss up some pictures from around Minneapolis. Nothing fancy, just the usual stuff.

So, uh… Minneapolis Sculpture Garden

1 Oct

Been biking a lot lately as the weather has been calm, cool and collected. The autumn days and evenings in Minnesota are some of the best for getting out and experiencing and checking out different things and places. Because not only do you get great colors as the trees turn from green to reds, browns and oranges, but you get to see it all in perfect weather. It’s not too hot or too cold and when there are no clouds in the sky, it just feels great to be outside. Frankly, if the weather in this state were to stay at this temperature all the time, I wouldn’t complain at all. It is still early in the fall season though, and as you can see, the trees are not all changed. They are just starting to turn, but when they do, it’s going to look great.

I also checked out the sculpture garden at the Walker Art Center yesterday. If ever you have seen a postcard of Minneapolis, it usually includes a shot of the Spoonbridge and Cherry sculpture. Here you can see some of the other sculptures that are also on the grounds. And while this place has nothing on, say, any European sculpture garden, it is still someplace that everyone in the TC should check out at least one time. Also, don’t pictures just look more “arty” when taken in black and white? I think I might add some more artist-y type shots in the future because they seem to come out better as well on the ol’ phone.

Also, just for the record, in that last shot, the white building in front of the IDS is the one I work in. Yea! :\
