Oh The Places I’ve Been

29 Sep

I’m not really sure what I mean with that title, but I did go golfing in Wisconsin, saw the Weisman Art Museum and the University of Minnesota campus and went around by my place to take pictures with a very fun, new little toy camera. So I guess I went places, but nowhere that I hadn’t really ever been before. Oh well, whatever. Enjoy the pictures.

The Weisman Art Museum is located on the U of M campus and was designed by Frank Gehry. He is famous for designing really outlandish and distinctive buildings and the Weisman is no exception. It is completely covered in stainless steel so it is hard to miss and when the sun comes out, as it did on the day I went there, the building really gives off a great shine and pops after being photographed. I went with black and white film for the 35 mm camera, but took a picture with my digital so you could get a sense of what it looks like in color.

I really like how the contrast in the black and white photos turned out because the building is so full of different nooks and crannies that, again, it really pops off the page. I also just walked around the U of M campus and took some pictures of other things that are out there. It’s a huge campus and there are many places to explore and these are just a few of the shots I took that day.

It being the last week of September, and before I start my new job, I went golfing with my dad for the final time this season at St. Croix National in Wisconsin. The course is really great and challenging. It also provides for some great scenery during the fall. Although it was rainy and a little too early for the full on fall effect yet, there were still some good shots out there and some nice looking foliage on the course. If it weren’t raining, it would have been quite the perfect day, but as it was, it was just an annoyance to play through.

After golfing, I got back to my place and, to my great surprise, I had a package in the mail. It was from South Korea and contained the awesome little camera that I ordered. It is a disderi robot camera and is so named because it looks like a little robot face. It’s so fun to play around with and looks like it too! It takes three images on one film image. Currently, I’m still playing around with it to figure out the best way to shoot with it, but it is so easy to tote around that I’m going to take it everywhere from now on. And yes, just as the instructions say, it is epoch-making!!!!

What could it be?!

The best part about that little camera, besides not using batteries to operate and being super light and small? IT WAS ONLY $15 SHIPPED!! So much fun for so little. You can’t beat that people. You just can’t.

Trying Something New This Summer

14 Mar

This something new is photography. Yes, this blog has photos that I’ve taken, but let’s be honest here, they are all with my cell phone, and that really isn’t conducive to getting really great shots. And since my dad had some photography equipment hanging around in an upstairs closet just collecting dust, I’m going to try and make the best of it and learn how to shoot photos with an older camera. None of the camera equipment is digital and all of it is from the late 70’s or early 80’s, but it is really high quality stuff. The main camera is an Olympus OM-2n (which I’ve garnered was a fairly professional 35mm SLR for the time) and has a all sorts of additional stuff to go with it. A telescopic lens, wide angle lens, filter and some other additional stuff will make for a lot of trial and error with the pictures, but it’s a learning experience and should be a lot of fun to use. Honestly, I used to use this camera when I was a little kid, so it’s really just about learning the art behind taking good pictures. I remember using it in London and since then it has been replaced by other cameras that are just point-and-shoot types to make things easier. But I want to try out photography in a more artful capacity than digital point-and-shoot, and since I can’t afford a DSLR, this is the next best thing. As you can see, there is quite a lot to play with here and my summer just got a whole lot fuller with a new hobby.
