Roger Waters The Wall: Live

28 Oct

I have to say, this was certainly the summer/fall of big name, stadium concerts for me. First there was Weezer headlining the Basilica Block Party, then Rush at the State Fair, followed by Gorillaz and NERD at the Target Center and last night, I witnessed Roger Waters perform The Wall at the Xcel Energy Center. As far as spectacles go, this was the best concert I have seen. It’s pretty much a performance piece. A giant 40 foot wall, video projections, fireworks, lasers, crashing planes, breakdancing kids, huge puppets and a flying pig! I didn’t have the greatest seat in the house (as that would have cost over $250) but for last minute tickets, it wasn’t that bad. And on the plus side, the Xcel probably has the best sound system in the Twin Cities for big concerts so the acoustics were great. However, the one spoiler to this concert – and I have to assume this goes for most Pink Floyd concerts – are the potheads. I’m pretty sure that if Cheech and Chong could conceive, their man-love child was sitting next to me. Dude was stoned and drunk out his mind! Not only did he try to talk to me throughout the first half of the show, he was crooning along to the songs before they were even out of Roger’s mouth. Sorry dude, but you don’t get any pot brownie points for knowing the lyrics before they are sung. Also, I can hear my own crappy voice at home, so I don’t need to hear yours at the show.

As the concert progressed toward the intermission, the wall continued to be built and the pothead continued to toke up and take swigs of whiskey. But his buzz was about to be harshed by me at intermission. As the lights came up and people streamed out to piss, he began to frantically search around under the seats and in his jacket pockets. What he was looking for was his glass pipe that looked exactly like a cigarette. How do I know this? Because it was under my foot. I hid it from him and eventually, when he began to play with his phone, bent over and cunningly (or probably clumsily, but it all looked the same to him so who the fuck cares) picked the pipe up off the ground and proceeded to head for the nearest trash bin. I walked around a bit with it in my pocket and saw the bin in question, but when I got there, thought better of it. That’s right, I ended up recycling it. I saved the environment, and also my concert experience because dude left during intermission and I didn’t see him again. If he did show up again, I didn’t know about it because I was way too deep into Comfortably Numb to care… and also because we slid over and totally jacked his seat for the better view. Yes, I am ruthless like that.

As with the album, the second half of the show was better than the first half. But overall, this show was something that I won’t soon forget and was the most visually over-the-top concert that I saw this year. If this concert is coming through your town and you haven’t gotten tickets yet, be sure to grab some up. Also, be sure to not do drugs for 40+ years of your life. That shit will mess you up.

An “A Fair” to Remember

8 Sep

Here’s what I’ve been up to in recent weeks.

I took a bike ride down the Greenway here in Minneapolis and hit the river. It’s a good ride and I may have to do it one more time before the season for biking ends and winter starts to kick everyone’s ass. This is the Lake Street/Marshall Ave bridge. Pretty good scenery on a beautiful day.

Then this oddity. Those are people. Many people. Many people doing yoga. It was a good sight… with the exception of all the dudes who were there only because A) they got roped into it, B) they wanted to see some hot yoga pants action up close or C) they are gay. Let’s be honest here, those are the only three reasons any dude would do yoga. If you can think of another (and I’m almost sure you can’t) leave a comment.

Then, as is the end of summer tradition in Minnesota, I went to the State Fair. Forget Texas because everything is not bigger in that good-for-nothing hell hole. Our State Fair is the biggest, bestest, most food-on-a-stick laden beast ever to be invented. You can’t get better than this… unless you have RUSH playing at the Grandstand! Not only would this be my first ever RUSH concert, it would be my first ever time seeing a concert at the Grandstand. And you know what, it was awesome. They played for almost three and a half hours and still didn’t hit all of the songs they are known for. Highlights of the show included YYZ, The Camera Eye and of course, the 10 minute drum solo from Neil Peart. In fact, here is the full setlist:

First Set
“Spirit of the Radio”
“Time Stand Still”
“Presto”
“Stick it Out”
“Working them Angels”
“Leave that Thing Alone”
“Faithless”
“BU2B”
“Freewill”
“Marathon”
“Subdivisions”

Second Set:
“Tom Sawyer”
“Red Barchetta”
“YYZ”
“Limelight”
“The Camera Eye”
“Witch Hunt”
“Vital Signs”
“Caravan”
Drum Solo
“Closer to the Heart”
“2112 – Part 1: Overature”
“2112 – Part 2: The Temples of Syrinx”
“Far Cry”

Encore:
“La Villa Strangiato”
“Working Man”

As you can see from the pics, the seats were sort of far away, and my camera on my phone does not take great night shots, and does not have a good zoom, but it is what it is. And then, there was this guy. As you can see from the bottom picture, I was not the only one to find this overall shod man a weird distraction.

I don’t know who wears that outfit to a RUSH concert, but he was certainly not pulling it off. He reminded me of Augustus Gloop from Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, if he were to don giant blue overalls. Other sights of the fair included the slide, the Space Tower, the DNR fish pool, a very racist metal sign, a lumberjack competition and people. Tons and tons of people (literally tons to as there were some whales out there). All in all, a good get together for MN.

As for the food, which I normally would have gorged myself on, I tried to stick to stuff that was more healthy this year. This is why I went with some marinated lamb as well as these here. These are called “Porcupine Bites” or something, and are meatballs made of elk (Why not porcupine? Who knows). They were mixed with spices, mushrooms, rice and a small amount of beef and then were placed on top a bed of baby red potatoes and covered with a delicious red wine and mushroom gravy. Damn were they good.

Next post: probably gonna be about cars.

Some quick pictures of things that I have been to in the past few weeks, or been doing, or have just been thinking about possibly being up to doing at some point in the near or far future. So, without further ado.

This is the beach. It is located at Lake Calhoun and is on 32nd street. It is very hot and pretty rocky, but there are some good sites to be seen.

Next up is the Pizza Luce Block Party. Lookbook and Brother Ali were the highlights of the event, both of which are pictured here. That chick from Lookbook is also really hot, I only wish I was wearing my glasses 😦

Then I went golfing in Wisconsin on Sunday. See that bunker out there? Yeah, I drove the ball into that. It’s only like 300 yards… into the wind. No biggie.

Target Field once again, but this time from the nosebleeds with a view of the Minneapolis skyline. Left early as it was the Twins up 7-1 and went to a happy hour for the final outs. Smalley’s 87 Club in case you wanted to know. Very good apps and cheap beer!

Finally, this past Sunday I went and saw the Led Zeppelin tribute band Zed Leppelin. They are supposed to be one of the best in the nation, and they did not disappoint. The concert lasted almost two hours and was FREE! Plus, they had actual production value and sounded very, very close to the real deal. One of the best concerts I’ve seen actually.

The only problem with concerts like this is the people they tend to attract… and these people invariably always sit directly in front of me. Case in point, the people in the picture below. The one on the right bears a striking resemblance to Nick Frost’s character in Spaced, while the one on the left was an idiot who put his stupid ass hat on sideways and then was the only person to actually put in EAR PLUGS while listening to these guys. Oh yeah, and he stood up and blocked my view while doing so for about a full minute. I wanted to slap him in the face, but I’m better than that… usually.

Stay tuned for the next post of more concert action, as well as some scenic stuff and the Minnesota State Fair. Also MST3K as well!
